We have been talking for a couple of years now about wanting to get a new mattress for our bed. We bought our first mattress from Gary the 300 pound mattress salesman at Sleep Country Canada (Why buy a mattress anywhere else!?) in the summer of 1999 and he told us we could expect to get 10-15 years out of it.
We were pretty good about flipping and rotating it for the first few years, but I suspect that moving it around so many times has taken its toll. We had planned to replace the mattress for our 10th anniversary (instead of that platinum wedding band I'd been wanting, haha!) but since we got married at the end of summer and we're musicians, that wasn't going to happen. *Note to all the non-musicians out there: Income in the summer is, well, not very good.*
We knew that we wanted to get a Tempur-pedic bed. My mother has one and we've slept on it a few times. Given that I still have occasional hip and/or pelvic pain, it seemed like it would be a good investment.
Ben's parents wanted to get him something for a graduation present. He had initially thought about a laptop but ours seems to have revived itself once again (is it a cat!??!) and so he instead suggested contributing to our mattress fund.
We ordered the mattress on Monday night and it showed up at 4:15 on Thursday. We're still getting used to it, but overall we are quite pleased! The old queen mattress is made up on the floor of our room. The theory is that maybe we'll put Anna in there on the nights when she needs our help to get back to sleep. That said, we don't notice her movement so much in the new bed so maybe it won't be an issue anymore!
If we get brave, we might take down her crib and remove everything from her room except for a mattress on the floor. I'm reluctant to give up her naps though. We might just wait to transition her when we move this summer instead.
