Tonight I made chicken fingers (courtesy of M&M Meats!), rice and frozen veggies for dinner. Now before anyone gets too excited, this was a big thing for me since I haven't been up to doing anything in the kitchen other than asking Ben to cook the pasta or make me a grilled cheese sandwich!
Rachel came running downstairs after her bath yelling about how there was an asparagus in disguise in her bathtub and not only that, there was popcorn all over the mirror. We have no clue where she gets some of her ideas!
She arrived at the dinner table and was excited to see the food, but the first thing she said was that she didn't like green things. I had intentionally given her mostly carrots in the mixed veggies along with maybe 3 peas and a couple pieces of corn. Rachel worked her way through the chicken and rice (aka silly elephant food! Don't ask why, I really couldn't tell you why I told her that one day!) and started to eat the carrots. I requested that she eat one "green thing" and she began to argue that she would prefer a yellow thing. She ate some corn and asked if it was popcorn. Um, no.
I continued to make my reasonable request about eating one green thing on her plate, and Rachel continued to argue. Finally, I told her that when I was a kid and had to eat things I didn't like, I would try to eat them with something that I did like. Rachel thought about this, and decided to make a pea & carrot "samwich"! Well, she loved it! Since dinner ended about half an hour ago, she has repeated over and over that "I thought I didn't like peas, but it turned out that I did!"
Now she is talking about how she needs to tell "her gym kids" next week about her pea & carrot samwich. She has also requested that I make cornflake chicken and veggies for dinner tomorrow night. She wants to have 30 peas in "samwiches" - we'll see what really happens.
She's also extrapolating from her dinner experience that maybe she should try all of the warm-up activities at the gym next week because even though she thought she wouldn't like them (and didn't do them today) she might like them if she tried them!
This kid just cracks me up sometimes. Mind you, I don't really need to hear about how she really did like peas a gazillion times! Oh, now it's just like how Franklin didn't know that the bird he met was friendly and he thought it was a monster. (We've been watching a lot of "Franklin & the Green Knight" which is a DVD about Franklin waiting for his baby turtle to arrive in the spring. It's actually a pretty good DVD and covers some issues that come up when expecting a new sibling.)
Time to get Rachel ready for bed. She just commented that the first number on the clock is a 6 and we'd better get to bed soon!

Email me if you want access...
I'm mildly disturbed by the fact that someone from E-post managed to find this blog and post a comment about our situation. The fact that it was addressed to a 3 year old is slightly amusing, but I'm still not thrilled that my blog was accessed by someone with absolutely no connection to us personally. I knew the chance was out there, but didn't worry about it until now.
I'm going to switch the blog to only allow people to read it who have permission from me. So if you want in, email me at festivo_strings@yahoo.ca and tell me who you are! I'll be switching the access in a week or so.

Full Moon
Yesterday was the full moon according to our calendar. That explains a lot!
Today Ben got a reasonable, intelligent Rogers employee on the phone. I doubt she'll last long there. She confirmed that we had not been credited correctly on our bills and said that she would get it fixed.
We also managed to get the Chapters refund put on the credit card today.
Rachel had a pretty good day. She had a blast helping me make dinosaur pancakes for dinner! I had bought some metal dinosaur molds awhile back - I think they came with a pancake mix or something. Anyway, I kept forgetting that we had them. Tonight I finally remembered, so each member of the family got a different dinosaur. Rachel had stegosaurus, I had tyrannosaurus rex, and Ben got triceratops.
When Ben finished teaching and came out to eat, Rachel wanted to know what his pancake was. First he thought it was stegosaurus, but Rachel set him straight on that. When he asked her what she thought it was, she said that she couldn't remember, but it didn't have "saurus" in it. Hehe.
I had a massage last night and can now sort of move again. I go for my 36 week appointment tomorrow morning. I don't really expect to hear that anything new is happening, but I can always hope! I have my pre-registration appointment at the hospital next Wednesday, so any time after that would be fine by me!
Oh - Rachel says that the baby is not yet a member of our family because it hasn't been born yet. She is getting excited though, and often checks out the sleepers and clothing items that have been washed and are sitting upstairs awaiting the delivery of Rachel's new dresser so that she can give her "old" one to the baby! She is thrilled that one of the sleepers has some elephants (and other animals) on it. She has also been discussing which clothes we can use for a boy and which ones for a girl. She is excited about setting up the baby's room, and says that she plans to help give the baby some bottles. I'm curious as to whether or not she'll follow through with any of her plans to help out when the baby gets here!

My friend has a blog dedicated to customer disservice, but I'm thinking of giving her a run for her money!
We got our Rogers bill online today. There was an $8 credit from last month, but this month it showed us owing in full. There was also no credit for the half-price long distance we are supposed to be getting. So once again, Ben got on the phone to Rogers. He was eventually told that we were credited 6 months at once for the long distance credit back in July. Unfortunately, the login session online had timed out and Ben didn't know the password to get back in (I was teaching at the time) so he could not confirm this. As I suspected, this is not the case. So Ben will be calling back.
While we're discussing customer disservice, I don't think I've blogged about our lovely Amex experience. Back in November, Ben applied for an American Express card at Costco. He did it partly to get the free case of water (yes, we are that pathetic!) and partly because it would be handy to not always use cash/debit at Costco. We used the Amex card to pay for our snow tires on December 3rd. A few weeks later, I thought it was odd that we hadn't received a bill, but chose to not worry about it. I thought that maybe it was taking awhile because it was the first bill.
Fast forward to January. A couple of weeks ago, Ben got a call from Amex saying that we needed to pay something immediately on the card or it would be suspended. Um, ok. Where's the bill? They claim it was sent out. We never received it. And no, I did NOT sign up for any form of online billing with this one! In any case, I scrambled to pay the bill online that day, and then had Ben call back to fight the $13.59 finance charge. He was able to get them to credit it back to the card, but I can't confirm that it's been done since every time I try to log in online it tells me that their system is experiencing problems.
While we're at it, back in November I ordered some books online from Chapters. When they arrived, I set them aside and looked at them several weeks later. I decided to return 3 of the 4 books as they weren't really what I was looking for. Ben took them back to the store in December and was assured that Chapters Online would refund the $40 to our VISA card. He left with a printout of this, and we thought that all would be well. I noticed a couple of weeks ago that we had not yet received the credit, so Ben called and was assured that it would be taken care of. I received an email that same day stating that it would be looked into. That was on Friday January 11th. Needless to say, no credit has showed up yet. Ben will be calling them again shortly.

Rachel at the doctor's office
This morning Rachel accompanied Ben to his appointment with the Crohns doctor. On seeing the pictures of digestive systems on the wall, she asked, "Dad, what are those pictures?" Ben told her that they were stomachs. Rachel thought about it and said, "But Dad, why are there body parts on the walls?"
Rachel's Recipes
Rachel is an advance planner. Since she already wants an elephant cake for her 4th birthday, she is planning ahead to what she'd like for her 5th birthday. Here are some recipes that Rachel dictated to me for the party next April:
Ribbons Cake:
2 full spoons cocoa
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup flour
3 cups sugar
another 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Put it in the oven, last you ice it then put sprinkles on it and that's how you make a Ribbons Cake. Then you get ready to eat it. You just have to have the birthday party, but we'll need some guests. Some of my friends will have to come over for my 5th birthday. I was just telling you the ingredients.
Chocolate:
First use a bit of cocoa, then do 2 whole cups of flour, then 1 cup of sugar, 3 teaspoons of vanilla, 1 full spoon of the milk, and 1 whole spoon of the baking powder. Then you have to put it in the freezer because chocolate is very cold.
Ballet Dancer Cupcakes:
First you need 1 whole spoon of sugar, 2 spoons of flour, a tablespoon of baking powder, 2 teaspoons of the vanilla and another spoon of the baking powder. Then one more spoon of the flour and you put it in the oven. There's no cocoa in those kind of cupcakes. So, Mom... what kind of food will we have at the party besides those 3 kinds?
Chocolate Bars:
First, to do chocolate bars you need one spoon of sugar, 2 full spoons of flour, a whole cup of baking powder, a little spoon of milk, a spoon of vanilla and then you put them in the freezer because they are very cold things.
Candy:
I'm thinking about making lots of different kinds so there will be enough for the people who are at the party. First, you do a whole spoon of sugar, one spoon of flour, 2 spoons of the baking powder, a teaspoon of vanilla and 2 spoons of cocoa. Then you put it in the freezer because that candy is going to be very cold.
Treats:
We could make some fruit. First we'll have to buy some fruit, and then keep it separate for next April. (After a short discussion about how fruit won't keep that long, Rachel suggested getting the fruit next January instead of now.)
Dumbo suggested getting two containers of fruit. That way people would have a choice.
Ribbons Cake:
2 full spoons cocoa
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup flour
3 cups sugar
another 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Put it in the oven, last you ice it then put sprinkles on it and that's how you make a Ribbons Cake. Then you get ready to eat it. Who's on first? Oh wait, Abbott & Costello were funny.
Welcome to the world of idiocy. Yesterday while I was adding up receipts for taxes, I noticed that we apparently had not received or paid any gas bills since August. Given all the bills that come in when you're a home owner, it's not that surprising that I didn't notice this. I had also signed up for epost, which is basically paperless billing where I am supposed to get email notification to view and pay bills. I currently pay all of our bills online from our bank account anyway, so this system made sense to me.
Wouldn't you think that someone from the gas company would call us or send us a letter concerning the fact that we haven't paid our bill in almost 5 months!?!?
Ben called this morning and found out that supposedly we are registered on epost, yet when I checked that yesterday it told me my registration was incomplete. The Union Gas employee told Ben that they hadn't contacted us yet because it wasn't worth their while until now for the amount that's owing. She also said that we needed to contact epost about seeing a bill rather than having them (Union Gas) send us one.
So Ben called Epost and was told that we had apparently registered to view bills on our bank account. Um, no, not on mine at least. It's a joint account though, so I logged in with Ben's info and sure enough, if I click on "view bill" I can see the last 4 months worth of bills. Ben asked why on earth we wouldn't be receiving email notifications of this and the Epost employee passed the buck and said that we needed to have registered for our bank to send us emails. Does anyone else think this is totally ridiculous?
So the upshot is that we apparently owe $383 on our gas bill. When I clicked to view the latest bill, it indicated that we needed to pay right away or it would be cut off. Isn't that lovely? The Union Gas employee said that they are apparently willing to work with us on a payment plan. I say that they're all full of crap.
Welcome to my Monday morning. We won't even discuss the hideous leg cramp that kept me awake half the night, or the pain that's come back every time I take a step.
I wonder what's next...

O fortuna!
100 bonus points to anyone who can place the title and why I might be using it!
Ben is on the phone with Rogers. Why? Because apparently we should be getting a 10% discount on all of our Rogers services if we "bundle" them together. You'd think that since we get one bill this would happen automatically. No. No, it doesn't. We were told something way back in the spring about how we'd need to talk to someone about having this done once our 6 months of free phone service was up.
Ben is also trying to figure out if we can downgrade our cable services but still keep most of the channels we want. This should not be difficult.
He has just informed me that apparently TLC is not in any packages. These people at Rogers are incredibly irritating, aren't they? The lady has put Ben on hold while she searches for it. Oh, guess what? You can only get TLC with the expensive VIP package that we currently have.
We've basically decided to downgrade now that we have to pay for our phone. I'm trying to find ways to cut the bills, and if giving up TSN and TLC knocks $25/month off our bill, that's fine by us!
Hmm. How surprising. Rogers will only bundle our services with a 2 year commitment to service. Now if they were actually providing a service, we might consider that. Since they're contributing to the Orff-like nature of my posts, I think that we'll just have to go without the 10% discount their website promises.
THIS IS INCREDIBLE. ROGERS ACTUALLY DISCONNECTED ALL OF OUR VIP CHANNELS AND BEN HASN'T EVEN HUNG UP THE PHONE YET! WOW. THEY DO PROVIDE SERVICE AFTER ALL. HAHAHA. (Now tell me again why it took 33 DAYS to get phone service?)
And to top it off, apparently we have an $8 credit on our next bill despite the fact that I assume we still have internet and phone access. Gee, I sure hope they didn't disconnect that as well. Guess we'll find out when I hit "post"!

In case anyone is wondering....
Our fridge did get fixed on Tuesday. The repairman told my mother that it would have made more sense for Sears to give us a new fridge rather than replace these major parts, but at least he was able to fix it! Sears sent someone out to pick up the loaner fridge yesterday, so in theory it's all over now.
I did a bit of grocery shopping yesterday but didn't fully stock up just yet.

Our Little Helper
I was thinking recently about things that Rachel likes to do to help around the house. We've been capitalizing on our "slave labour" as we like to call it, especially since Rachel enjoys it! Here are some tasks she helps with on a regular basis:
*Setting the table: If I get the plates and cups down, Rachel will carry them one by one and set them at our respective places. She can also get the correct cutlery out of the drawers by herself and put them roughly where they should go. She likes to carry over condiments and anything else that's not too heavy to carry! And yes, we do let her carry our china by herself. So far nothing has broken. I still hold the record for most broken dishes in our house.
*Clearing the table: Rachel usually remembers to clear her place, and she will often help out by taking our plates over to the counter as well. Every once in awhile she decides to carry things over and dump them directly in the sink if one of us has started the dishes already. Hehe. She is also pretty good at throwing out any garbage from the plates and wiping her hands & face after meals.
*Getting her own snacks and breakfast: Rachel can open the fridge and help herself to cheese or yogurt fairly easily. She can also get out fruit. I've recently had her opening the pantry and getting her cereal off of the bottom shelf since I don't like to bend down these days! (Funny quote from Rachel when we were discussing how I'd have more energy to play and run around after the baby comes out: "And Mom, you'll be able to bend down too!")
*Stripping and making beds: Rachel loves helping Ben with this. She helps smooth out the sheets, place the pillows, pull up the covers, etc, etc. I think that she also enjoys tossing all of her elephants on the floor in order to get to her sheets!
*Laundry: If she's in the right mood, Rachel enjoys putting things in the washing machine, helping to pour the detergent, and most of all, pressing the start button to get the wash cycle going. She also likes to sort laundry and help put it away, especially when it involves her precious elephant clothing being clean and ready to wear again!
*Vacuuming: Ok, she doesn't really help with this, but she thinks she does. She gets out her own "vacuum" (usually a scarf) and follows Ben around as he vacuums. She does help pick things up off the floor in preparation for vaccuming though! And yesterday she told me that she was supervising Daddy.
*Grocery shopping: If I send Ben to the store, Rachel almost always goes along with him. He doesn't even need a list if she goes, because she can remember things very easily! Favourite shopping quote from Rachel: "We can't let Daddy go by himself because he buys green bananas and moldy raspberries!" (I may have suggested to her that it would be helpful if she went since she could help Dad pick out the good stuff. Hehe.)
*Not really housework: Since I've become less mobile with this pregnancy (We are not even going to discuss the fact that I'm not dilated even a tiny bit and the baby hasn't fully dropped. Apparently I'm doomed to another 33 days of pain.), Rachel has had to accept that she really *can* get her own shoes/boots on and off. Ben helps her on occasion, but we've been pushing her to do it by herself and she's quite proud of herself when she does it. This may not seem big to some of you, but Rachel is the kind of kid who will quite happily let other people dress her and not even make an effort to do it herself. Lately, she has also been very good at undressing herself and even getting dressed some mornings.
*Intellectual stuff: Rachel scares us sometimes with how much she knows! She's known her alphabet and basic numbers for over a couple of years now, but she recognizes a lot more words than I would have thought. There was a story in her new magazine about an owl named Olive. Rachel thought it said "Oliver" because she has a book named "Oliver" about an elephant. She also frequently asked me what something spells, whether it's in a book, on the computer, or something I've said: "Mom, what does p-u-d-d-i-n-g spell?", "Mom, why is there an 's' on elephant?", "Mom, what does r-a-s-c-a-l spell?" (the last one is from a Kindermusik book featuring a monkey named Rascal.)
Every once in awhile I wonder if I should be teaching her more about sounding out words, but she does know the sounds that all the letters make so I'm not going to worry too much about it!
Rachel likes to play with numbers and is learning to tell time pretty well on a digital clock. Thanks to Aunt Rebecca, she does have a conventional clock as well (with an elephant in it!), but we haven't worried about teaching her to tell time on it yet. The only time we have issues with her reading the digital clock wrong is when she randomly decides to read it Hebrew-style.
She also knows her entire Hebrew alphabet, both to recite and to recognize the letters on paper. She likes to tell us how the 4-year-olds at preschool learn their alef-bet. Hehe. It doesn't bother her that she doesn't get to do alef-bet at school, probably because one of the teachers takes the 3-year-olds to do special art projects at that time. Rachel is happiest when she's reading or doing art projects. (well, ok, she is probably happiest when surrounded by elephants, but reading and art come in a close second!)
Rachel also loves to tell stories. They are often very creative and elaborate stories that involve all kinds of characters. She's quite expressive and could talk your ear off for hours with the stories she tells!
I'm sure I'll think of more things later, but that's quite enough rambling for one post!

Did you know...
... that penguins sometimes come from peacocks? Also, penguins hatch four at a time from eggs. They sometimes wander in the high mountains. They also bury their eggs in a bit of sand and water.
Rachel is busy educating us this morning. Grandma Karen got her a subscription to the children's magazine "Your Big Backyard" and I gave Rachel her first magazine this morning. She's incredibly excited about all of the animals. There are even TWO pictures of elephants - one African and one Asian.

All about Rachel
She cracks us up on a daily basis. Yesterday Ben was reading her Shabbat board book that basically tells the story of creation. He was trying to trip her up with what happened on which day, so I thought I'd get in on the game. I started singing a la 12 Days of Christmas:
"On the 6th day of creation, my creator said to me..."
I was rudely cut off by my daughter informing me that "He hadn't made us yet! You can't sing that, Mommy!"
Technicalities...
*************************************************************************************
She really is the world's easiest child to put to bed. Tonight she asked if we could do snack, story and then bed. How many kids ASK to go to bed!??!!? Although she sometimes takes her sweet time settling in for the night at other peoples' houses (yes, Grandma & Grandpa, we certainly do remember that fun night at your house not so long ago that involved screaming and someone getting up at least 4-5 times for no apparent reason!), she has never given us trouble going to sleep at home. Whether it's Mom & Dad, grandparents, or babysitters putting her to bed, she just goes.
It's possible that she's a little too gullible though. Almost every night after we've either brushed her teeth or read her a bedtime story, we say something like, "Ok, let's see who gets into your bed first!" and off she goes running to get there before we do. One day she'll realize that we don't even try to race her.
While we're discussing gullibility, any time Rachel balks at taking a bath, all we have to do is make elephant noises and say something about how Rachel the Elephant (It's a large rubber elephant. Don't ask. Just don't ask.) is really eager to get in the bath & up goes Rachel the girl as quick as can be.
If Rachel doesn't want to get dressed, all I have to do is make elephant noises and comment that it sounds like Carle the elephant is trying on her clothes. Rachel runs to get to her room before Carle can put on her outfit and all is well.
And why is it that if Princess Sparkly (Island Princess Barbie plastic elephant) offers Rachel food she always accepts it? In fact, one of the elephants often brings Rachel a snack for the ride home from pre-school. No matter what it is, she will eat it if it comes from an elephant.
*************************************************************************************
We get a lot of spontaneous "I love you" comments from Rachel, usually accompanied by hugs.
I can't believe that she will be FOUR in April. Amusingly enough, she still does not want a birthday party, at least not like her preschool friends seem to have. That's fine with me. I have no desire to shell out tons of money for a party at the gym or some other place when we can just have family & a few friends over at our house. Rachel has requested an elephant cake. More specifically, she would like a cake with a picture of Oliver on it. Oliver is an elephant in a children's book called (appropriately) Oliver.
*************************************************************************************
We've been trying to ease Rachel into the idea of a new baby. She knows that the baby is inside my uterus and that I am very tired because it's hard work growing a baby. Today Rachel saw the baby kick for the first time - she thought that was great! We also talked about how the baby will be named in a special ceremony just like she was. Rachel is planning to wear her pretty new purple dress that Grandma Fern bought for her, even though she doesn't actually have the dress yet! I also had to dig up the dress that Rachel wore for her naming. It's so tiny! Apparently if we have a girl baby, Rachel is pushing for the elephant onesie as a naming outfit. I told her we'd discuss it further after the baby is born but that a girl baby would likely get a dress for her naming.
*************************************************************************************
It seems odd to think that in a few short weeks Rachel won't be our only out-of-utero child. We've had a lot of time to be a family of 3. I'm trying to spend more time doing things with Rachel despite my frequent desire to tell her to "JUST STOP ASKING WHY! I JUST TOLD YOU WHY! DON'T ASK ME WHY AGAIN!!!!!!!"
Ben's current "favourite" thing is when Rachel asks me something and I give her an answer right in front of him. Never mind that Ben is right there, Rachel always says something like, "Dad! Mom said..." It's like she thinks he can't hear or something. Then again, he does have incredibly selective hearing on occasion.

Approximately 39 days left to go...
Not that I'm counting down until my due date or anything. No, not at all. Ok, maybe I am counting just a little. Or a lot. Or it's all I can think about. Take your pick! It would help if I could sleep or walk. Wait. I'm being unfair. I can sleep for about 2-3 hours at a time followed by 1-1.5 hour stretches. Pelvic separation is just not fun. It is painful. Extremely painful. I'm clinging to the faint hope that this really will make delivery easier this time around since in theory Rachel paved the way and now everything is just more loose down there!
I'm trying not to get my hopes up about a possible early delivery although most days I cannot possibly see how this baby can stay inside for so much longer!!

Murphy's Law
1. I no longer fit into my black gig pants. This is clearly why I got a call the other day asking me to play with Orchestra London next week. Since I'm obviously subbing for someone as opposed to having been hired in the first place, I'm amused that I will be playing the concerts in black cords. I'm even more amused that when Ben went to pick up our music this morning, there was no second violin music in the orchestra office. I guess I'll be unprepared and underdressed for this one!
2. Our power went out for 4 hours this afternoon, as did the power in much of northwest London. This meant that what should have been a simple afternoon trip to Costco to pick up a rotisserie chicken (keep in mind that we have no freezer and the loaner fridge is tiny!) turned into a 1.5 hour ordeal of navigating city streets without working traffic lights hoping to find a grocery store that had power. I was eventually successful at the Byron A & P. However, the drive home took 37 minutes. It should have taken 10-12 at most. Oh well.
In other news, Sears had arbitrarily scheduled our fridge repair for next Monday morning, but they weren't planning to call and tell us this. I asked Ben to call yesterday to find out what was happening and that's what he was told. He managed to get the appointment switched to Tuesday between 12-5pm. Lovely. They also told him that they weren't sure if the part was in yet, but even if it was, there were no appointments left for Friday. Then why would they have ever indicated that fixing it today was a possibility?!?! I dug up our receipt which says that if it can't be fixed they have to refund us the money. If for any reason the part is not in by Tuesday, I think we'll have to push and see what they'll do. Regardless, Ben is NOT driving the loaner fridge all the way back to Pond Mills! (basically the opposite end of London - it's as far southeast as we are northwest)

Things you just don't expect to hear...
Rachel enjoys making up names for her animal friends, both real and imaginary. Tonight in the bath she announced that a giraffe was attending an elephant's birthday party. The giraffe's name? Labia. No, we have not discussed the term before.
I explained that perhaps it was an unsuitable name since labia refers to part of the vagina (ok, I'm the last person to be good at discussing technical terms, but she does know the word vagina!). Rachel thought about this for a moment and then announced that it was ok to use as a name because:
"Elephants don't have vaginas!"
I think the discussion on mammals can wait for another day.

A Sears Update
Our limited one year warranty apparently neither entitles us to a loaner fridge nor to any compensation for spoiled food.
Supposedly someone will be calling us first thing in the morning (now where have I heard that before?) to let us know IF they have any loaner fridges in stock. Apparently they might be able to get us a bar fridge but we'd have to go pick it up.
The parts to fix our fridge won't be in until Friday and apparently our repair is scheduled for next Monday, January 14th. I don't suppose they'll like hearing that we'll be out of the house for a couple of hours and can't just sit there from 8-5.
I suppose this explains the funny feeling I had about purchasing this fridge in the first place. Grr doesn't even begin to describe how I feel about it right now.

End of an affair
I'm sad to announce that a love affair of almost 9 years is coming to an end.
Ben and I first discovered the Sears Outlet store near our house when we were engaged. Our very first purchase there was a blue glider that was on sale for half price!
Over the years that followed, many other purchases were made without incident:
*Half-price blue pull-out couch
*Upright freezer
*Treadmill
*Set of 2 coffee tables with minimal scratching
*Storage cabinet (I believe this was purchased on a day that I saw it while shopping without Ben, called him on our cell and told him to get over to the store immediately because I wasn't moving away from it until he got there! Yes, it was that good a deal!)
*Black-out shade for Rachel's room when she was a baby
*TV
*Microwave
*DVD player
*Incredibly cheap toys for Rachel including her activity table that still occasionally gets played with & her set of Disney princess doll accessories (stroller, bassinet, etc)
I'm sure there's more.
Last year on May 4th, we purchased a stove, fridge, washer & dryer from Sears Outlet. We were pleased by their speedy delivery and had no reason to suspect that we didn't have many more years of Sears Outlet purchasing ahead of us.
Early in December, I noticed that the ice cream in our freezer seemed softer than it should be. Ben turned the temperature down in the freezer and hoped that would take care of it. I was skeptical, but who listens to the pregnant hormonal lady?!? (Note: my husband should listen to my instincts more often.)
On Friday afternoon, I went to help myself to some orange sherbet. Too bad it was mush. So was just about everything else in the freezer. Ben put in a call to Sears right away and they initially said that someone would come out between 8 and 5 on Saturday. The only problem with that was that we were committed to being out from 11-6:30 at a local bridal show, so the Sears lady said that someone would come between 8 and 11.
Too bad no-one showed up. Ben called back later on Saturday and was told that someone would call us first thing Monday morning and that we would have to be home all day Monday. He explained that we would be out from 8:15-9:15 and 11-12 but could be home other than that. He left our cell phone number with the Sears lady and she promised that we'd get a call.
In the meantime, I suspected that the fridge was starting to be less efficient at cooling things down. My suspicions were confirmed this morning when I checked out our cheese stash (including my precious Brie!) and found it to be rather soft and mushy.
I finally received a phone call at around 9:45am stating that someone would be here at 11 to look at the fridge. I nicely explained that 11 was not possible, so the lady eventually rearranged it and the repairman ended up coming around 12:30.
The bad news? Our 8 month old fridge needs a new compressor AND evaporator. Isn't that lovely?
The worse news? They don't have the parts in stock right now. Supposedly someone is calling us back this afternoon to confirm when the parts will be in and the repair can be scheduled.
Ben inquired about compensation for the food on a tip from one of the moms at Rachel's preschool. He was initially told that if we had an extended warranty it would definitely be covered, but believe me, he is going to push for compensation. He's playing up the pregnant wife & young child aspect of this despite that fact that neither one of us actually drinks milk.
I'm currently craving protein like there's no tomorrow. I somehow doubt that Sears will compensate us for the meals out. I'll make pasta for dinner tonight and I guess I'll just have to chuck the leftover alfredo sauce in the jar (I can't have tomato sauce due to serious heartburn issues!) if we don't use it all.
All good things must come to an end. Goodbye, Sears Outlet. It's a shame you let us down after all these years...

Who knew?
Did you know that five pin bowling is apparently only in Canada?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five-pin_bowling
I made an offhanded comment on a forum I post at about bowling while 37 weeks pregnant with Rachel, but it was only five pin. Apparently Americans don't do five pin bowling.
Interesting.

My kid is too smart for me
Tonight at dinner we were talking about how we'd go for bath and then have dessert later because we had chicken for dinner and I'd promised Rachel a chocolate pudding for dessert. Thus an entire conversation about kosher rules started up. I thought I'd keep it simple and talk about how we don't mix meat and dairy. We talked about how meat comes from animals. Then Rachel pipes up and says, "But dairy comes from cows. Chocolate milk comes from brown cows!" (I think we told her that ONCE as a joke, well over a year ago!!)
So we got into a discussion about what is written in the Torah about meat and dairy foods. Rachel took it all in and seemed to understand, but we are still cracking up about the cows/milk comment. In any case, she had no problem waiting an hour or so to get her dessert.
